Lunch Program Update

Congratulations go out to our 2nd Graders who received the Sacrament of First Reconciliation last weekend.  It was a lovely ceremony and the students were respectful and clearly prepared.  We wish these students all the best as they grow and develop in their Catholic faith.  As an adult the ceremony serves as a nice reminder of some of the basics of our faith--that God loves us, wants us to make good choices, and wants to forgive.  I look forward to seeing these students, and all our students, progress in the faith.  Each of our classes will be going to Reconciliation this Advent season as well.  I have read Advent described as a time to remember the first coming of Jesus, and also as a season when that remembrance directs our heart to wait for the second coming.  So Advent is a time of devout and joyful expectation.  I hope you can make the season a special time for your family with prayer and reflection.

Traditions are an important part of the Christmas season.  I know many of my favorite memories of Christmas come from the traditions my family observed when I was a boy.  As holiday time approaches we have the perfect opportunity to create and celebrate meaningful traditions with your family.  Very often, a routine practice or the display of an object that is meaningful to a family can easily become a custom or tradition.  Family values are reflected in the way these traditions are consistently practiced, and these practices can become a lens through which family members view their lives and shape their opinions.  Traditions also are an important way of handing down information, beliefs, and customs.  I hope this Christmas season is a time for your family to develop new traditions that will be fun, and provide comfort and strength to your children well into their adult lives.  The Catholic Church also has many traditions and rituals that provide a special sense of meaning for those who practice them.  The Rosary, Stations of the Cross, and of course the liturgy are just a few of the rituals and rites that have been handed down to us.  As the year progresses I hope these are an important part of your family’s faith life.

We want liturgy to be an important part of the lives of our students.  But we really only can do that if the students go to Mass beyond school.  Our Catholic faith calls us to make Sunday liturgy a part of our lives.  Perhaps this Advent season provides an opportunity to think about Mass attendance.

This can be a difficult time of year with the variety of illnesses that can go around.  Hand washing is important.  The following are a few basic guidelines to use when deciding to keep your child home: they have a fever or have had one in the last 24 hours, they have vomited within the last 24 hours, they are too tired to focus, red eyes- with or without drainage, or have the chills or are nauseous.  Thank you for your support and understanding.  Tardiness can also be an issue for students.  From an educator’s perspective, starting the day off right cannot be emphasized enough.  If you find yourself running late in the morning more than just occasionally, this can have an impact on your student’s performance at school.

Terra Nova scores are now available for pick up in the office.  SJS performed higher than the national average and higher than the diocese average in most categories.  Way to go SJS!  These results will help teachers tailor instruction in the classroom, and also help us in the school improvement process.

Peace,

William Kelly
